S为Sport的S，即为运动档，可提高发动机转速，使车子能够快速的起步以及加速。
B为Braking的B，即为低速档，可以控制发动机的输出功率，使车子能够慢速行驶，一般很长的下坡时使用。
丰田混合动力车的B档除了上面的功能外，还有回收能源，为车载2次电池充电的功能。
低速档的意思
B这个档位，英文称为Engine braking，中文的意思就是引擎制动，也就是降低发动机转速从而减速，一般在很长的下坡中常用，功能跟普通的自动档车的2档和L档一样。而丰田普锐斯的B档虽然也有以上所说的功能，但还有一个更重要的功能---能源回收再利用。普锐斯的刹车系统带有能源回收功能，每当踩刹车时，所产生的能源就会被系统自动回收，用来为车载电瓶充电。用B档行走会跟踩刹车时有一样的功能，但由于发动机转速低，所以车子不会开的很快。
